SHGs spur rural higher education
A workshop on promotion of Rural Higher Education - Role of Self Help Groups was organised by Rural Institutes Forum, NCRI, at Narsapur in Medak district, Andhra Pradesh, on September 22, 2009. There was a huge participation of active self help group leaders and also leaders of various voluntary agencies and community based organisations. The workshop was inaugurated by the chief guest, Smt. Sunita Laxma Reddy, Hon’ble Minister of Minor Irrigation, Government of Andhra Pradesh. In the inaugural session, Shri R.R.K. Murthy, programme organiser, has given an introductory note on the workshop, the purpose and the objective of the programme. After the formal inauguration, the chief guest gave her message to the
audience. Then Shri J.K Palit gave his keynote address. Dr. Mahtab S. Bamji, a scientist and social activist who is also the trustee of Dangoria Charitable Trust, has given her speech in a interesting and thought provoking manner. Later, Shri Manohar Rao, President, Medvan, has given his speech with a lot of factual information on the status of higher education in Medak and surrounding districts. He also gave an account on the success factors of SHGs . He also has thrown light on various ideas by which SHGs can be involved in promoting the rural higher education. He also appreciated the initiative of NCRI to conduct this kind of workshop. In the second session, they had brain-storming exercises where participants were divided into several groups and deliberated up on their ideas on how to bring about awareness on the importance of higher education through self help groups and the scope for the opportunities. In the last session, there was a presentation by all the groups involved in the brain-storming exercise and they shared their experiences.
